In the beginning was the Name

In this post I will explain how I got the germ of the idea for the game, before I get to the technical aspects.

I was so enthralled by AI generated art that I started to crave more excuses to use it. I had done t-shirts, two prints that I hanged on my wall, and I was making a lot of art for Magic:the Gathering custom cards to print. I was thinking about selling prints, by my experience with the quality of canvas printing and availability of solutions to frame those canvases. Before this project, there was a half-hearted attempt to sell art. In any case I needed a name, a fictional artist for that art.

I didn't intend to hide the fact that what I would be selling would be digital AI art, but I wanted a veneer of deniability. Some secrets are kept in plain sight, so I took the root of my idea which was 'stable diffusion' and I made up this anagram: 'Louis FF de Bastin' which in time became my main character.

I remember letters falling easily into place when I sat down to do it. Louis, was there at the end of 'diffusion' scrambled but close enough to be suggestive of this French name. The f's seemed like they were going to be trouble, so it was easy to see that they belonged together, and to keep to the francophone theme, what about a middle name  like François-Ferdinand? easy-peasy. Let's give this artist a noble family and we can scratch 'd' and 'e' from the pool of letters. And let's keep it simple and arrange S,T,A,B,I,N  to sound French NISBAT, NATSIB... There it was 'Louis FF de Bastin'. One online translator even said that 'bastin' meant pool, but I don't think it's true, but in any case it is also real surname.

I've been using this name in MTG custom cards frequently, but that wasn't enough. A name has a story and that name wanted me to tell it.

At that time I had just finished my second novel "El Corazón del Constructo" (I am still in the process of finding a publisher for that, but you can get a link to my first self-published novel in my tumblr: https://jm--bueno.tumblr.com. so I was beginning to think about what would I do next, and I remembered this genre of videogame: A Visual Novel!? Heck! Why not?

Now you know why is he named like that, but you'll never see his face. 'Louis FF de Bastin' dark silhouette mystery man.
